NY trooper who caught escaped inmate in June is honored

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund says Sgt. Jay Cook is its Officer of the Month for November. Cook spotted escaped inmate David Sweat near the Canadian border on June 28 and shot him twice as he fled.

The Nov. 5 front-page article “Illinois officer died in ‘carefully staged suicide’ ” said that the officer “was not among the handful of police officers shot and killed by a suspect this year.” Thirty-one officers nationwide have been killed by criminal suspects this year. To describe those deaths as a “handful” greatly disrespects their supreme sacrifice, as well as the 20,538 fallen heroes whose names are on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

Philippi police chief honored for helping talk down armed student

Philippi’s police chief has been recognized for helping talk down a high schooler who held his classmates and teacher hostage and then threatened suicide. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund announced in a press release Thursday that it selected Jeffery Walters as its Officer of the Month for October.
