WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) has announced the selection of Detective Sergeant James Clark of the Troy (MI) Police Department as Officer of the Month for June 1999.

Like many people who go into law enforcement, Sergeant James Clark started his career because of a strong desire to help people. He also wanted to make a contribution to his community and to his country. "When you first start out," says Sergeant Clark, "you want to make a difference, you want to change the world. At some point reality sets in and you realize that the contributions you make come when a case is solved and there is closure for the families, especially the victims and/or survivors of violent crimes."

A Vietnam War veteran and the recipient of the Army Commendation Medal for Valor, Sergeant Clark began his career as a police officer in 1973.

Currently assigned to the special investigations unit and specializing in major crimes, Sergeant Clark is also the department's arson investigator. He has also served as a member of the department's tactical support team, uniform patrol and traffic safety.

During his tenure in the Special Investigations Unit, Sergeant Clark was involved in the arrests and convictions of a multi-state burglary ring that was dubbed the "Wrecking Crew" because of the violent and brazen method in which they committed home invasions and armed robberies.

Known for his tenacious investigative skills, Sergeant Clark was the lead investigator in a case involving the abduction, murder and dismemberment of the victim. Another agency had arrested two individuals for these crimes. However, the case was then handed over to Sergeant Clark, whose thorough investigation turned up the real killer and the two who were previously arrested were exonerated.

Most recently, Sergeant Clark was involved in the high profile murder case of a 64-year-old woman who was run down after her purse was snatched. There were no witnesses. For over two years Sergeant Clark and his partner pursued the case, which resulted in a murder indictment.

Throughout his career, Sergeant Clark has been the recipient of numerous awards, including a citation for valor for saving two young boys who fell through the ice, and a citation for professional excellence from the Michigan State Police and the Community Service Award for his work as a team leader for the Michigan Special Olympics.

Troy Police Chief Charles Craft said, "Sergeant Clark exhibits tremendous pride and personal dedication to his job as a peace officer. The term, public servant, truly exemplifies his career as a police officer with the Troy Police Department. Sergeant Clark is considered by his peers to be a skillful and tenacious investigator. Our Department is extremely fortunate to have an officer who demonstrates the leadership qualities of Sergeant Clark. It's been said that success has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It is what you do for others. Sergeant Clark has demonstrated that [philosophy] in his career as a police officer. The Troy Police Department is proud and honored to have Sergeant Clark receive this prestigious award."

The NLEOMF Officer of the Month Program is sponsored by a generous contribution from THE FORCE.
