WASHINGTON, D.C. — Detective Sabrina Currin sensed trouble. She had been called to the hospital to investigate the death of a baby. Child abuse was suspected. She was asking the baby’s father some routine questions when he bolted for the door. Dressed in high heels, Sabrina chased him down and made the arrest.

The arrest was just one of many child abuse cases she has solved in her 14 years as a deputy with the Harnett County, North Carolina Sheriff’s Office. Her former supervisor, Captain Ricky Simmons, calls her the "best I’ve ever seen in sexual and child abuse cases."

Her long list of accomplishments also includes serving as an emergency medical technician, helping to establish a rape crisis intervention program in Harnett County, and directing the local chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

North Carolina’s current Secretary of State, Elaine Marshall, worked with Sabrina to establish the rape crisis center. She says Detective Currin "really identifies with the victims, and her dedication is unsurpassed."

Captain Jerry Lamm, Sabrina’s current supervisor, echoes that sentiment. "When others will go home, she stays until she gets the job done ... She’s very intelligent, a very thorough investigator," he adds.

She also possesses great courage. On September 23, Sabrina and another North Carolina detective, Allison Bunker, were on their way to lunch when a bulletin went out over the radio to be on the lookout for two alleged cop killers. When the suspects were spotted, Detectives Currin and Bunker immediately joined in the chase, and were instrumental in making the capture.

What does Sabrina rank as her greatest accomplishment? She says its the fulfillment of a dream for her dad. "My father always wanted to be Santa Claus," Sabrina explained. "When we were young, times were tight . . . but now with the help of the Sheriff’s Office and community stores, we located families who are in need and furnish them with donated non-perishable items. For the last two years, my dad has traveled through Harnett County putting gifts under trees."
