NHTSA Officer Safety Initiatives

NHTSA and the Memorial Fund form partnership to save lives of law enforcement officers

In August 2011, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated an innovative partnership to promote law enforcement officer safety on the roadways.

Total Traffic-related Fatalities (1962-2012)

With this partnership, the Memorial Fund and NHTSA aim to reduce the number of traffic-related officer fatalities.

  • Traffic-related incidents were the leading cause of law enforcement fatalities for 14 of the last 15 years.

  • A total of 50 officers were killed in traffic-related incidents in 2012, a decrease of 17 percent from 2011 when 60 officers were killed in traffic-related incidents.
