NHTSA and the Memorial Fund form partnership to save lives of law enforcement officers

In August 2011, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated an innovative partnership to promote law enforcement officer safety on the roadways.

Total Traffic-related Fatalities in 2011 (as of 1/28/2012)

With this partnership, the Memorial Fund and NHTSA aim to reduce the number of traffic-related officer fatalities.

• Traffic-related incidents were the leading cause of law enforcement fatalities for the 13 years between 1997-2010.
  
  
• In 2011, 60 officers were killed in traffic-related incidents, a decrease of 15 percent from 2010 when 71 officers were killed in traffic-related incidents.
