Of the 19,298 officers who have died in the line of duty throughout U.S. history, there were:
10,787 firearms-related deaths (56%);
5,364 traffic-related deaths (28%); and
3,147 other causes (16%).
Looking at total traffic-related deaths, 15% of officers were killed in auto crashes; 6.5% were killed in motorcycle crashes; and 6.5%
were struck and killed by vehicles.
Additionally, a relatively small
number of officers died in bicycle or train-related incidents.
Historically, firearms-related fatalities have lead all other
categories. But in recent years, there has been a reversal of this
historical trend, with traffic-related fatalities being the leading cause for the thirteenth year in a row in 2010.
