Police Officer Murrell was killed in a single vehicle crash. While responding to a larceny in progress call, Officer Murrell's vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole. Officer Murrell is the first officer to be killed in a single vehicle crash in 2017 and the first law enforcement fatality from the state of Illinois.
