Artifact Detective - August 2011

With the sheer volume of artifacts that have been acquired by the National Law Enforcement Museum—more than 15,000 to date—we can’t always devote as much time to researching individual objects as we would like. We are calling on you to help us uncover some of the stories behind our objects. We will post pictures and any information we have on specific objects in our collection on our website, on our blog, and in our newsletter. We would like you to tell us anything you may know about the item. All information is welcome; sources and citations are requested when possible.

Please email: museum@nleomf.org.

2007.44.1 Collection of the National Law Enforcement Museum, Washington, D.C.

Hard Hat, Port Authority Police Department NY & NJ

What we know:

  • This item was left by an unknown donor in our Visitors Center sometime before 2006.

  • Someone may have worn the hat on or after September 11, 2001.

  • The front sticker and label printed on the side identify the hat as PAPD (Port Authority Police Department) Emergency Services.
  • The side sticker identifies Local 14 New York City.

What we want to know:

  • When and where was this hard hat worn?

  • Who wore it and what was he/she doing while wearing it?

  • What are the related organizations and meanings of the 5 stickers and labels on the hat?
