Penny Harrington was appointed the first female police chief in the nation, serving in Portland, Oregon.

1992: Jacquelyn Barrett Elected Sheriff of Fulton County (GA)

The first African-American woman sheriff in the United States was Jacquelyn Barrett, who was elected sheriff of Fulton County, Ga., in November 1992.
