| National Law Enforcement Museum Breaks Ground |

On October 14th, members of the U.S. Congress, major corporations, law enforcement officers, supporters and survivors gathered at the future site of the National Law Enforcement Museum, located across the street from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC to celebrate groundbreaking of the Museum that will tell the story of American law enforcement through exhibits, collections, research and education.
In his keynote address U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder emphasized, "When the National Law Enforcement Museum opens in 2013, it will tell a story that no other museum does – of more than three centuries of law enforcement officers protecting their fellow citizens, advancing the cause of justice, and establishing a tradition of service that continues to keep us safe.”
The Gala
After the Museum groundbreaking ceremony, distinguished guests from the government, corporate, and private sectors, along with law enforcement officers and supporters gathered at the National Building Museum for the Groundbreaking Gala. "Homeland security begins with hometown security, and law enforcement play a critical role in keeping communities across our nation safe," said Secretary Janet Napolitano in her keynote address. Boston Police Officer Thomas Griffiths, shared his family’s inspiring story of law enforcement, service and honor. Inside the black-tie event, celebrities including Bill Kurtis, Linda Carter, and Vincent D'Onofrio shared their support for the law enforcement community. Read more about Museum Groundbreaking

| Congratulations 2010 Harley-Davidson Winner |

On October 14th, 2010 at the Groundbreaking Gala for the National Law Enforcement Museum, Steve St. Thomas, Director of Worldwide Police and Fleet Sales for Harley-Davidson joined A&E's Bill Kurtis on stage to draw the winning ticket for a 2010 Harley-Davidson, Peace Officers Special Edition, Road King motorcycle. The winner was David White from Wilmot, New Hampshire. The next morning, John Shanks, the Memorial Fund's Director of Law Enforcement Relations was joined by Law & Order: Criminal Intent star Vincent D'Onofrio as they informed David that he was the proud owner of the new Harley-Davidson motorcycle. | Baltimore City FOP Latest Major Donor to Museum |
|
With over 700 law enforcement officers and supporters gathered at the gala to celebrate groundbreaking of the National Law Enforcement Museum, FOP President Robert Cherry joined John Shanks, Director of Law Enforcement Relations for the Memorial Fund, at a reception to formally sign a pledge donating $100,000 to the Museum’s capital campaign, “A Matter of Honor.” The Baltimore City FOP Lodge’s pledge marks the forty-seventh law enforcement organization to donate $100,000 or more to the Museum.
Ms. Martha Wood, surviving spouse of Baltimore City Police Pilot Barry Wood, joined President Cherry for the signing of the pledge. On November 4, 1998, Officer Barry Wood died in the line of duty when his police helicopter crashed during a stolen vehicle chase. “I am so very proud of the Baltimore City FOP Lodge,” said Ms. Wood. “I know that Barry would certainly approve of the support by the FOP; all FOP members should be proud to be a part of the Museum,” she said. | Department of Justice Announces VALOR Initiative |
|
At the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) annual conference, the Department of Justice announced the new VALOR Initiative—Preventing Violence Against Law Enforcement and Ensuring Officer Resilience and Survivability (VALOR). The VALOR Initiative is a nationwide training and technical assistance program to train officers to deal with the often "deadly mix" of officer, offender, and the circumstances that brought them together, along with training on identifying concealed weapons, hostage situations, dealing with domestic and international terrorists, and other violent scenarios.
"I applaud the Justice Department for their commitment to officer safety. We owe it to our law enforcement officers to ensure they are equipped with the best training and assistance," said Memorial Fund Chairman & CEO, Craig W. Floyd. Learn more about the VALOR Initiative
