Description: Officer Stewart was shot and killed as he and other officers responded to a disturbance call. When officers arrived, the group of men who were gambling on the sidewalk fled the scene. Officer Stewart pursued and arrested one of the suspects. While attempting to place the suspect in his patrol unit the suspect's brother-in-law approached Officer Stewart from the back and shot him in the head. Officer Stewart's partner found him shot fatally on the ground. Officer Stewart was transported to St. John's hospital where he was put on life support. He succumbed to his injuries a few hours later. The suspect was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
