Description: Sergeant Gaughan was shot and killed when he and two other detectives stopped a suspicious vehicle in Laurel, Maryland. After stopping the vehicle, three suspects exited the van and fled to a nearby apartment building. Sergeant Gaughan was shot twice in the abdomen when he chased one of the suspects behind the building. Sergeant Gaughan was flown to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
