2018 Officer Wellness Finalist

La Mesa Police Department

 

The La Mesa Police Department (LMPD) has a implemented a wellness program called BeSTOW (Beyond Survival Towards Officer Wellness). The Peer Support Team serves all employees from officers to dispatchers to retirees; the team is available 24/7 for on-duty and off-duty experiences. The Peer Support Team also assists other agencies/jurisdictions when needed and helped create the County Wellness Committee. LMPD’s Peer Support Team also provides CISM debriefings for employees involved in traumatic events, to include dispatchers and Fire Services personnel on the scene/involved with the incident. Spouses and families also receive CISM debriefings, separately from employees, after traumatic events occur that their loved one worked. La Mesa Police Department also contracts with a mental health clinician to allow employees up to six visits/incident for free.

Employees are also encouraged to participate in the voluntary, quarterly fitness test; employees can earn up to 40 hours of compensatory time off, depending on their performance every year. The fitness test promotes regular exercise and movement. The department also improves their employees’ morale by giving back through community engagement with their youth leadership camp, “adopting” families at Christmas and their Citizens’ Academy programs.
